Mermaid and Monster is a contemporary art agency based in Wales, UK. We represent emerging and established artists, promoting their work through curatorial projects, publications, events, and art fairs.
Mermaid and Monster are Gordon Dalton, Emma Price and Richard Higlett. Between us, Mermaid and Monster have over 50 years experience of project management, curating, professional development, consultation, exhibiting and working with artists at all levels.
Gordon Dalton
Gordon Dalton is an artist, curator and writer based in Cardiff, Wales. Gordon has curated shows for a broad range of venues including the Contemporary Art Society, London; Chapter, Cardiff; VANE, Newcastle, along with major public art commissions for Safle, Cardiff and recently Bristol City Council. Artists include: Olaf Breuning, Richard Deacon, Tatham & O'Sullivan, Peter Liversidge, Marjetica Potrc, Tim Davies, Nils Norman, Kendall Geers and Simon Pope.
He has contributed catalogue essays for various galleries and has written for Contemporary, Flash Art, Product, Circa and a-n magazine. He is an editorial advisor and Open Frequency selector for Axis. Gordon was the Visual Arts Coordinator for Cardiff's short listed bid to be European Capital of Culture 2008 and initiated and developed DEPOT - a proposal for a new 3000sqm temporary art space in Cardiff with architects Caruso St John. He coordinated the inaugural May You Live In Interesting Times, Cardiff's Festival of Creative Technology. He is the current Learning & Interpretation Officer for Glynn Vivian Gallery & Museum, Swansea.
As an artist he continues to exhibit internationally with recent exhibitions in Los Angeles, London, Ljubljana, Manchester and New York. He is a recipient of an Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award. Gordon also continues to collaborate with the artist S Mark Gubb. www.gordondalton.co.uk
Emma Price
Based in Cardiff, Wales, Emma was a senior project manager for public art agency Safle, responsible for developing strategies and managing public art commissions within the UK. She is currently pursuing a career as an independent art consultant.
Emma joined Safle after a previous career as a fine art photographer and as an Art and Design Lecturer, Glamorgan Centre of Art and Design Technology and previously as a Learning Support Officer at Staffordshire University. Emma has been curating and commissioning site-specific artwork project for the past seven years and is developing programmes of creative projects through the management and implementation of commissions with local and international artists for public and private sector clients.
She is a Board Member of Ffotogallery Wales and Blown Magazine. She has worked closely with a wide range of artists including Brian Tolle, Heather & Ivan Morison, N55, Common Culture, Martin Parr, Sarah Pickering, Sabine Hornig, Dan Holdsworth, Jean-Bernard Metais, Jennifer Savage, Gitta Gschwender to name a few. Emma was involved in the initial discussions for Mermaid & Monster and now returns to join the team on a permanent basis.
Richard Higlett
Richard Higlett is an artist/curator based in Cardiff and a co-founder of Mermaid and Monster. He is also a co-founder of the Artists Resource Cardiff (arc) an artist-led networking initiative for the capital of Wales.
As an artist he is a previous recipient of a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council, he has exhibited internationally as himself and as the imaginary outsider artist Wally French. He also works collaboratively with the writer Leona Jones.
Previously has worked as a Project Manager for Cardiff Council, working on developing and implementing the 2005 Centenary Cultural Program and was involved in initiating the first Cardiff Contemporary Visual Art Month. He also worked on the first Artes Mundi Prize International Visual Art Prize. An experienced lecturer of art practice and theory he is a previous Open Frequency Advisor for Axis UK. In 2008, he worked as a consultant for the Arts Council of Wales and in 2009 was the Project Manager for Wales at the 53rd Venice Biennale of Art and International Arts Officer for Wales Arts International. www.richardhiglett.com
